Artist Statement

"The world we live in today expects very little in terms of quality.

Disposable consumption fuels the world's economies."

My work aims to find recognition for the value of unique handmade objects that, eventually, last longer for the pleasure and benefit of our senses, as well as the promotion of individual creativity leading to the development of new original styles and techniques.

About Me

ana: Hi! My name is Ana... Depending on my projects I divide my work between my Atelier in Sintra, Portugal and my Studio in Notting Hill, London UK. I started my textile art twenty years ago. My work seems to grow organically as it is rarely pre-planned. Colours or fabrics that I want to blend often trigger my motivation. I may start by sketching an idea or experimenting a new technique. I make my own fabrics from silk and wool fibres, dyed cotton and knitted yarns. These fabrics are embellished with encrustations of fused and distressed textiles, hand stitches with unusual threads, fine ribbons, glass beads and gemstones. When I initiate a piece, I am always looking forward to see the outcome of the dialogue established between myself and the piece I am trying to create. I'm fascinated by the transformation of fabric and fibre into adornments that can act as extensions of our body - such as textile jewellery, fashion accessories, handbags, or extensions of our home - wall hangings, lampshades amongst others.
